OPEN LETTER
April
the 25th, 2005
Mr. Miguel Quintana
Pali,
President of the company La Voz de México. S.A. de C. V.
Publisher and president of the newspapers Voz del Caribe and
The Miami Herald Cancun Edition.
Dear
Mr. Quintana Pali:
We
write to strongly object the publication of a series of six long articles in
Voz del Caribe publicly criminalizing the children’s human rights
project known as La Casita, and its President, Dr. Patricia Seoane.
In
contrast with the false and scandalous portrait that your newspaper presents
to its readers, the signers of this letter have first-hand knowledge of the
quality care that all children at La Casita receive, thanks to the
professionalism and humanitarian convictions of its staff and Board of
Directors.
We
have known Dr. Seoane and La Casita for many years and have supported—and
will continue to support— their work, helping needy Mexican children.
As
members of the international community, we feel insulted by the
irresponsible editorial policies of your newspaper that have allowed
slanderous and defamatory claims to tarnish the reputation of a remarkable
human being and an honorable institution. In doing so, your newspaper has
also insulted all people of all countries who have collaborated for more
than ten years with Patricia Seoane and La Casita.
The
signers of this open letter find it particularly appalling that a picture of
international tourists visiting La Casita in broad daylight has been
used without any scruples by Voz del Caribe, as “proof” to
shamefully insinuate illegal activities.
Mr.
Quintana Pali, the editorial policies of your newspaper not only seem to
have lower standards than tabloid, yellow journalism, but they are neither
international tourism friendly, nor are they in the best interest of Cancun
as a tourist resort. They are even dangerous, for negative public sentiment
leading to violence against American, European and other country’s
citizens, can be aroused when foreign tourists are irresponsibly
‘criminalized’ for bringing aid to Mayan children in need.
The
signers of this open letter request that Voz del Caribe stop
immediately the libelous campaign against Dr. Patricia Seoane, La Casita,
and international tourists —like us— who collaborate with this humanitarian
project. We also demand a public apology and the immediate resignation of
your newspaper director, and of all those responsible for the slanderous
affirmations that have been made in the two past weeks.
We are
forwarding a copy of this letter, along with the defamatory articles of your
newspaper, to the Board of Directors of The Miami Herald in Florida,
USA, to lodge a formal complaint against your publishing company. Likewise,
we are filing complaints with the Mexican Embassies at our respective
countries, as well as at the American, British, Japanese, and other European
consulates to inform of this worrisome situation.
Sincerely,
Ms. Judith
